Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

IUI stands for Intra Uterine Insemination. It’s also sometimes called an artificial insemination. IUI works by inoculating processed sperms directly into the uterus through IUI catheter around the time of ovulation, after ovulation induction and trigger, helping the sperm get closer to the egg.

Before the insemination procedure, preliminary basic investigations including hormonal assay is to be required to rule out any gynecology pathology. HSG to be done to ensure any one or both Fallopian tube is patent on 7th to 10th day of period. The ovulation induction medicine to be started to stimulate the ovulation from day 3 of the period. When dominant follicles are reaching 18 to 20 mm in size,which is considered as a mature follicle, injection HCG is given to trigger the ovulation. It will take 34 to 36 hours to ovulate then only inseminate the collected and processed semen from your partner or a donor. It goes through a process called “sperm washing“or processing that collects a concentrated amount of healthy and active sperm from the semen. Then your doctor inseminate the sperm right into the uterus with  the help of IUI catheter with special technique. Fertilization will occur in ampullary part of Fallopian tube then fertilized egg or embryo travels through the tube and implantation occur in the endometrial cavity of the uterus then only result as a pregnancy. Urine for pregnancy test should be done two weeks after IUI. IUI is a simple and low-tech procedure, and it can be less expensive than other types of fertility treatments. It increases your chances of pregnancy, but is depend upon individuals. Its success rate is only 18-20%.
